What to look for on the Navacerrada webcams before you drive up
- Is the road white? Check this first. If the tarmac looks white or shows tyre tracks in the snow, the DGT will usually require chains or winter tyres. If it is black and just wet, the risk is ice later in the afternoon.
- Where does the snow start? Work through the cameras from the bottom up: km 12.5, El Ventorrillo, km 18.5 and the pass. The first one with white verges tells you the height at which the snow has settled.
- Is it windy? If you see snow blowing across the road or off the ridges, there is a strong wind up top: colder than the thermometer suggests, and snow drifting onto the road.
When to check the webcams
Look at the cameras the night before to see whether it has snowed during the day, although the picture is dark at night. Check again between 8 and 9 am, once it is light, before you get in the car. Webcam and forecast work best together: a white camera plus snow forecast for today means leave early or pick another day.
Road conditions on the Puerto de Navacerrada
The pass sits at 1,858 m and links Madrid, via the M-601, with Segovia, via the CL-601. When it snows, the DGT can require chains or winter tyres and restrict lorries. Before you leave, check the official status at dgt.es or by calling 011: a webcam will not tell you which restrictions are in force.
