When I decided to organize a getaway to Sierra Nevada , I had in mind a trip full of adventure, adrenaline and total disconnection. I had never been to this iconic ski resort in the south of Spain, and what I experienced far exceeded my expectations. If you are thinking of making a getaway to Sierra Nevada, here I tell you about my experience and why I encourage you to live yours.
Arrival in Sierra Nevada: The Beginning of the Adventure
The journey to Sierra Nevada already foreshadowed the adventure. I had come from Granada, a city that welcomes you with a unique mix of history and culture, but as you get closer to the mountains, the air gets cooler and the landscape changes radically. The winding road to the station is full of breathtaking views, and every curve seems to reveal a new, even more impressive panorama. I knew I was in for a special experience.
When I arrived, the first thing that struck me was the altitude . We are talking about one of the highest ski resorts in Europe, with Pico Veleta towering imposingly at 3,398 metres. As soon as I got out of the car, the cold, crisp air instantly woke you up. From the first moment, I felt that energy that only comes from being in the middle of the mountains.
Skiing and Snowboarding: Challenge in the Snow
The first day in Sierra Nevada I dedicated to a mandatory activity: skiing . Although I am not an expert, I am quite good at it, and the slopes in Sierra Nevada offer options for all levels. I tried some blue runs to warm up, and little by little I got the courage to try some red ones.
The amazing thing about skiing here is that you don't just get to enjoy the sport, but also the mind-blowing views . On clear days, you can even see the Mediterranean Sea from some slopes. It was surreal to be skiing, surrounded by snow, and have the horizon with the deep blue of the sea as a backdrop.
If you're more adventurous, Sulayr snowpark is a must-see. It's where I had my first serious experience with freestyle jumps and modules. I'm not going to lie, I fell a few times (and in some pretty comical ways), but that feeling of overcoming trying again and again is part of the adventure. It's like an adrenaline game where every achievement, no matter how small, feels amazing.
Beyond Skiing: Adventure Activities
One of the things that surprised me the most about Sierra Nevada is that there is much more to it than just skiing and snowboarding. On the second day, after an intense session on the slopes, I decided to try something different: snowmobiling . It was brutal.
The snowmobile tour took me through snowy valleys and hidden paths that you normally don't see if you just stay on the slopes. The feeling of speed and control, going through those mountainous landscapes amidst the silence of the snow, was impressive. There's something special about hearing only the sound of the engine and watching the snow slide under your feet.
I also had the chance to go snowshoeing , which was a completely different experience. At first I thought it would be more peaceful, but walking through deep snow requires more effort than I imagined. However, the views are worth every step, and if you like landscape photography, this is the place to capture postcard-perfect images.
Après-Ski: Relaxation and a Good Atmosphere
After a day full of adrenaline, there is nothing better than relaxing in one of the resort's bars or restaurants. The atmosphere is very relaxed, with people from all over enjoying a beer or a good wine after a day in the snow.
One of my favourite stops was La Bodega , a cosy little bar where I tried some traditional Andalusian tapas accompanied by a glass of local wine. It was the perfect contrast between the harshness of the day in the mountains and the warmth of the evening atmosphere.
If you prefer something more lively, there are bars with live music and open-air parties where the fun never stops. I opted for a quieter plan, but there are plenty of options for those looking for a more lively après-ski.
Where to Sleep: The Pleasure of Resting with Views
Choosing accommodation in Sierra Nevada depends on the type of experience you are looking for. I stayed in a boutique hotel in the Pradollano area, right at the foot of the slopes. Waking up, opening the window and seeing the snow-capped mountains in front of you is priceless. Plus, being just a few steps from the slopes allows you to make the most of the day without wasting time on transfers.
Some of my fellow travelers decided to stay in more remote cabins, surrounded by nature, which also has its charm. It all depends on whether you prefer comfort and proximity or a more adventurous touch in your accommodation.
Why would I return to Sierra Nevada?
If there's one thing that became clear to me on this trip, it's that Sierra Nevada has something for everyone. Whether you're an adrenaline-seeking adventurer or someone who just wants to disconnect and enjoy nature, this place offers a unique experience. I personally can't wait to go back, especially after being left wanting to try more routes and perhaps visit in the summer to enjoy the greener side of the mountain.
If you have never been to Sierra Nevada , I invite you to try it. Get ready to slide down its slopes, lose yourself in its landscapes and enjoy the pure essence of the mountain.
